City Council Meeting Recap- August 5, 2014 Special Session
Remember back in June when City Council decided to cancel its meetings in the month of August? Well don’t forget they stipulated that they could meet for a special session- and they just held one! On August 5th, they introduced 4 pieces of legislation, 2 ordinances, and 2 resolutions, for which there will be a vote on September 8th at their formal meeting.
Brewery on Tobacco Row- Ord. 2014-168, Ord. 2014-169: These two ordinances would allow the Stone Brewing Company, the tenth largest in the country, to operate a facility in Richmond. This proposed project is known as “Project Gogi”. The ordinances authorize special use of the properties near Rockett’s Landing for over 100,000 barrels of beer a year, which the new brewery would certainly do down the line. Remember, a special use authorization is needed because the site is located in an M-1 Light Industrial zoning district, which forbids brewing over 100,000 barrels of beer.
This is a potential revenue opportunity for the city that could also create about one hundred jobs. Keep in mind that the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority owns this site, and has also designated it for commercial redevelopment.
Economic Development Authority Program Fund- Res. 2014-R161: This resolution is a part of the Stone Brewery project, and according to the Times Dispatch, is meant to approve the use of money from pool of funds created originally in 1998 to build a parking lot in Tobacco Row. It would go right near the new brewery.
